The Reidsville Review is reporting the town is on the verge of getting a cell phone tower.
To be located somewhere along Freeway Drive, Atlantic Technology Consultant George Condyles assured the City Council that the tower will serve people who use iphones and ipads.
American Towers attorney Tom Johnson said the tower would be barely visible to most Reidsville residents.
City Councilman Donald expressed concern about the health effects of the tower. Johnson said the city has no authority over such concerns and besides that the tower won't emit any "ionizing radiation" and is perfectly healthy for everyone.
Mayor Jay Donecker worried about the tower interfering with Wharf's Airport on Highway 158. Johnson said there will be no worries about the airport.
No one who works at the Review was around when the City Council was successfully sued for denying a construction permit for a cell phone tower a few years ago. Most of the Review staff was in elementary school at the time. The judge in the case referred to the City Council as "capricious and arbitrary" when making a decision. Councilman Joan Zdanski was concerned the tower would attract lightning and set the town on fire. Councilman Clark Turner was also mighty worried about negative consequences.
